SPECIALTY FABRIC INFORMATION

I am using alot of cork which is very durable, natural, sustainable, vegan, PETA approved, eco friendly product from Portugal. Cork has naturally occurring anti mildew and anti bacterial qualities as well as water resistant properties!  Cork oak trees have their bark removed by skilled labour men every 7-9 years.  The bark then grows back and is reharvested making it a truly sustainable product.

Because of the nature of cork, coming from a natural wood source, the surface can be pitted with small holes and cracks. This is part of the appearance and natural quality.

I also utilize fabrics created for kimonos. Some fabric pieces come from unused vintage fabric bolts. Some are pieces that used to be kimono, now taken apart, cleaned and pressed and in beautiful condition given their age. Most of these fabrics were created decades ago in small workrooms, and their exact history and production methods are not documented. Many kimono fabrics are created once, for one 13-yard bolt only - making them very unique.

I also use fabric cottons from India and brightly colored handwoven fabric from Guatemala.

Ikat - a fabric in which the yarns have been tie-dyed before weaving.

Tsumugi(ç´¬) is a traditional slub silk cloth from Japan, though similar textiles are found in other countries. ... Traditionally a peasant cloth, handmade tsumugi is very labor-intensive to produce, and has become expensive over time, valued as a luxury folk-craft.

1. GRAY/BLACK HEXAGONS RAINSTORM RUSTIC TSUMUGI KIMONO SILK

Black, white and gray, in this Japanese Tsumugi ikat with rustic hexagons, some with floral and geometric patterns inside. This pure raw silk is lightweight, thin, lusciously soft and slubby, with a bit of body, and no drape or shine. Beautifully woven with a strong crossdye "Rain" effect. Hexagons are about 2-3" in size, and they overlap each other through the bolt. In Japan, hexagons and tortoise shells signify longevity and good fortune. This vintage kimono silk from Japan has never been used and has been carefully stored for decades, so it is in pristine condition.

Slightly crisp before washing, slightly sheer, very soft. When washed, the shrinkage tightens up the weave a little, and it gets softer and a bit crinkly before ironing; a beautiful slightly rustic cotton.  It's even more textured and richly colored than the photos show.  India.

GREY ARCS YARN-DYED VINTAGE KIMONO WOOL

Gentle arcs like curved blades of grass, far off into the horizon, in darker black, crossing over one another, each one about 3-4" across. They whisper, but they're everywhere.  Both sides of this fabric are beautiful; the arcs are lighter on one side, darker on the other. The yarns are just black and white so the overall look is gray. The design is in the weave; this is not a print. We think this is wool blended with synthetic meant for men's kimono or haori jacket; it's thin and light, softer than most pure wool, not shiny, not sleek but it is supple.
